MODEST MUSSORGSKY “PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION”

This piece is a wonderful example of how to “paint pictures” with music. Mussorgsky got the idea visiting an exhibition by his close friend, painter and architect Victor Hartmann.

The suite is Mussorgsky’s most famous piano composition and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It has become further known through various orchestrations and arrangements produced by other musicians and composers, with Maurice Ravel’s arrangement being by far the most recorded and performed.

The suite begins with a theme of a “walk” that returns in a modified version 5 times during the piece. This symbolises a walk from one picture to another within the exhibition hall. The piece has 10 parts, each standing for one picture. Performed by Opera-Quartet: Henno Soode (violin), Eivin Toodo (violin), Kerstin Tomson (viola), Mati Leibak (cello), text by Aleksei Turovski.

Organised by Kerstin Tomson
