Pirjo Jonas



Pirjo Jonas graduated from the Opera Class of the Estonian Music and Theatre Academy in 2007 and in 2009 she received her Master’s Degree in the same field (the singing class of Nadia Kurem). In addition, she graduated from Tartu University, having majored in English language and literature. Since the season 2010/2011 she is a soloist of Vanemuine Theatre. Her repertoire ranges from Baroque music to the works of contemporary composers. She has given recitals in Estonia and abroad and has been the soloist of many oratorios: Haydn’s “Creation”, Schubert’s Mass in G Major, Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42 “Wie der Hirsch Schreit”, Charpentier’s “Te Deum”, Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” and “Laudate pueri Dominum”, Saint-Saëns’ “Christmas Oratorio”, Mozart’s “Exsultate, jubilate”, “Regina coeli” and “Vesperae solennes de confessore”, Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” and “St John Passion”, Händel’s “Messiah” and “Gloria in excelsis Deo”, Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and “Magnificat”, etc. Her opera and operetta repertoire includes Anastasia (Kálmán’s “Die Csárdásfürstin”), Oscar (Verdi’s “Un ballo in maschera”, both at the Estonian National Opera), Mozart’s Papagena (“Die Zauberflöte”), Ninetta (“La finta semplice”) and Adele (Isouard’s “Le billet de loterie”, all being the productions of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre’s Opera Studio), Susanna (Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro”), Massenet’s Sophie (“Werther”) and La Charmeuse (“Thaïs”, Festival PromFest), Damon (Händel’s “Acis and Galatea”), Cupido (Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld”), First soprano and Titania (Purcell’s “The Fairy Queen”), Frasquita (Bizet’s “Carmen”), Viiu (Tubin’s “The Parson of Reigi”), Carlotta Giudelli (Weber’s/Rice’s “The Phantom of the Opera”) among others. In 2011 she received the Chrystal Shoe Award and a special prize for the best interpretation of Schubert’s “Ave Maria” at the VII Klaudia Taev Young Opera Singers’ Festival as well as the scholarship of the International Association of Wagner Societies.
