Mati Vaikmaa graduated from Estonian Music Academy in 1986 (the singing class of L. Issakova) and obtained his Master’s Degree from the same institution in 1999. He has furthered his education at St. Petersburg State Conservatory and with A. Orlovitz, R. Gothon, V. Noreika. In 1981–1986 he sung in the chorus of the Estonian National Opera, in 1986–1989 he was soloist with Theatre Vanemuine and in 1989–2006 with Estonian National Opera. He was the theatre’s producer in 2002–2010. His repertoire includes Malatesta (Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale”), Gianni and Rinuccio (Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”), Guglielmo (Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”), Sid (Britten’s “Albert Herring”), Fedka (Bock’s “The Fiddler on the Roof”), Figaro (Paisiello’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia”), Eeyore (Raadik’s “Pooh”), Anton (Kangro’s “Traitor”), Cornelius (Herman’s “Hallo, Dolly!”), Captain Castel-Jaloux (Tamberg’s “Cyrano de Bergerac”), Basilio (Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro”), Doctor Blind and Alfred (Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus”), Don Ottavio (Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”), Allergic (Kangro’s “Heart”), Testaccio (Strauss’ “Eine Nacht in Venedig”), Kusti (Ehala’s “Bumpy”), Bishop and Fueille (Schönberg’s “Les Miserables”), Njegus (Lehár’s “Die lustige Witwe”), etc. He has sung the tenor parts in oratorios (Charpentier’s “Te Deum”, Schütz’s “Christmas Oratorio”, etc). He has given recitals in Estonia, Germany and Finland. His repertoire includes also song cycles by Schumann, Schubert, Mozart, Brahms, Wolf, Wilm and many Estonian composers.
