Aare Saal graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music as an opera singer (Prof. Ivo Kuusk, Prof. Virgilijus Noreika and Prof. Jaakko Ryhänen). In 1990 he participated in the master class of Gino Bechi and in 1997–2000 he frequently attended the master classes of Rolando Panerai. Aare Saal won the 1st prize at the international competition “Voices of Rossini and Donizetti” (1996, Italy). In 1997 he won the Georg Ots Prize. Aare Saal made his opera debut in 1989 at the Estonian National Opera with the role of Figaro in Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro”. His repertoire includes more than 40 opera and operetta roles in the productions of the Estonian National Opera, as well as the productions of theatre Vanemuine. The most important roles include the title roles in Verdi’s “Nabucco”, Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin”, Verdi’s “Rigoletto”, Figaro (Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville”), Escamillo (Bizet’s “Carmen”), Count Almaviva (Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro”), Belcore (Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore”), Puccini’s Marcello (“La bohème”) and Sonora (“La fanciulla del West”, stage director José Cura), Verdi’s Don Carlo (“Ernani”), Rodrigo (“Don Carlo”), Renato (“Un ballo in maschera”) and Amonasro (“Aida”), as well as Valentin (Gounod’s “Faust”), Yeletsky (Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades”), Dandini (Rossini’s “La Cenerentola”), Edwin (Kálmán’s “Die Csárdásfürstin”), Achillas (Händel’s “Julius Caesar”), the Third Guest and the U.S. soldier (Tüür’s “Wallenberg”), Severo (Donizetti’s “Poliuto”), etc. As a guest soloist Aare Saal has sung at the Latvian National Opera, Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre, Florence City Theatre, Dramatiska Ensemble in Stockholm, Malmö Opera and Music Theatre. His repertoire includes also recitals of Estonian, Russian and Italian music.
