Tempestuous and magical opera “Faust“ by Charles Gounod will be on the stage of the Estonian National Opera on October 27 and November 1, 2018. Both of the performances are remarkable due to the guest stars in the leading roles – tenor David Astorga as Faust and soprano Perrine Madoeuf as Marguerite.

“The most beautiful thing about this role is the deep and realistic sense of humanity. I don’t see him as a dark character, but rather as a person who is struggling with the matter of aging,“ says Astorga. He adds that the role differs from his usual characters because lyrical tenors tend to play young and rather kind roles. Faust is more dramatic and vocally very intense.

Soprano Perrine Madoeuf agrees that the piece is vocally very well written and gives a singer an opportunity to express herself in light and happy scenes as well as in dramatic appearances. Madoeuf says: “Marguerite is a wonderful role and I am very excited to perform it! Last time when I performed at the Estonian National Opera, I found wonderful colleagues and high quality choir and orchestra. I really had a great time! I hope Estonian audience will enjoy it as much as I do!“

For David Astorga, this is the first time to perform on the stage of the Estonian National Opera: „I am very happy and honoured to have this opportunity. I will try to have fun on the stage but also, give the audience some inspiration on the stage. As I am Costa Rican, I will do my best in order to bring the warmth and the light of the tropics to this beautiful opera house.“

“Faust” premiered at the Estonian National Opera on September 20, 2012. The opera is staged by Dmitri Bertman (Helikon-Opera, Moscow), the designer is Ene-Liis Semper (NO99). The conductor is Vello Pähn.
