The Estonian National Opera Chorus is a professional high-level mixed chorus consisting of 50 singers. Throughout its history, the chorus has been a part of dozens of opera, operetta and musical performances, the most popular of which have also been performed abroad. The following outstanding musicians have worked with the chorus: August Topman, Verner Nerep, Tiiu Targama, Kaja Tammemägi, Ira Trilljärv, Uno Järvela, Venno Laul, Peeter Lilje, Anne Dorbek, Jüri Rent, Elmo Tiisvald. Since September 2011 the chief chorus master is Hirvo Surva and chorus masters are Heli Jürgenson and Peeter Perens. Apart from taking part in theatre’s performances, a significant portion of the chorus’s work also consists of giving concerts and recording music. The more important vocal symphonic works that the chorus has performed, include Christus am Ölberge and An die Freude by Beethoven, Dvořák’s and Verdi’s Requiems, Liszt’s Christus, Song of Destiny and German Requiem by Brahms, War Requiem by Britten, Requiem by Kreek, Daphnis et Cloé by Ravel, Gurrelieder by Schönberg, Carmina Burana by Orff, Five Mystical Songs by Williams, Jonah’s Mission, Jenseits des Jordan and Know Ye Not by Tobias, oratorio Job by A. Kapp, Amore et igne by L. Sumera and many more. The chorus took part in the Estonian Song Festival of 2009, where, among other works, Pärt’s Credo was performed side-by-side with other Estonian professional musical collectives. The chorus has also given a number of significant a cappella performances, such as the mystery Ultimos Ritos by Tavener, Vespers Op. 37 by Rachmaninoff, Deutsche Motette by R. Strauss, etc. Estonian National Opera Chorus won the annual Estonia Theatre Award 2010 for professional interpretation of the musically and dramaturgically demanding part in Prokofiev’s opera The Love for Three Oranges.
