Estonian National Opera was founded in 1906 and is the home for the Estonian National Opera Orchestra, formed in 1907. Its first music director was Otto Herman, who started also organising symphony concerts. The first concert was held on February 23 (NS March 5) in 1907, conducted by Otto Hermann. In the following years he was succeeded by the chief conductors Adalbert Wirkhaus, Raimund Kull, Verner Nerep, Priit Nigula, Kirill Raudsepp, Neeme Järvi, Eri Klas, Paul Mägi, Jüri Alperten. Since 2004 the Artistic Director and chief conductor is Arvo Volmer. In addition to the regular opera performances, the orchestra has performed with different concert programs of symphonic works. It has cooperated with a number of outstanding soloists, such as Christian Lindberg, Isabella van Keulen, Montserrat Caballe, Alexander Markovich, etc. During the last seasons Arvo Volmer has brought to stage concert performances of many operas, such as Wagner’s Tannhäuser with Carlos Spierer (2003), Pylkkänen’s Mare and Her Son with Hannu Lintu (in cooperation with Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, 2005), Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila (2005), Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito (2006), Bellini’s I puritani (2007, conductor Manlio Benzi, Italy), Alfredo Catalani’s La Wally (2007), Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra (2009), Rossini’s Guillaume Tell (2009), Bizet’s Les pêcheurs de perles (2010), Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi (2010) and Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride (2011). The orchestra has made guest appearances in Great Britain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Germany, Russia. It has given guest performances together with the opera and the ballet troupe in various opera theatres and festivals, including the Finnish National Opera and Latvian National Opera, Savonlinna Opera Festival, Dalhalla Opera Festival, etc.
