The 105th Season at the Estonian National Opera
Estonian National Opera
28.08.2010
The upcoming season will bring along many fascinating productions of all genres. Theatre goers will be treated to treasured classics as well as theatrical works less known in Estonia. Altogether, there will be ten new productions, six concerts and guest performances in Riga, Pärnu, Jõhvi, Paide and Tartu. All in all, the theatre has planned 277 performances for the new season.
The first new production of the season will premiere on September 16, when the stage is set for one of the gems among the works of Imre Kálmán – the operetta Die Csárdásfürstin in a classically dazzling version by Mart Sander. On October 29, the theatre will celebrate the premiere of Puccini’s La bohème, one of the most beloved operas ever, directed by Ran Arthur Braun from Israel. The concert performance of Bellini’s stunningly beautiful opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi on November 11 and Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera The Tsar’s Bride on February 11, both conducted by Arvo Volmer, are going to be exciting events. The opera gala of the International Music Day scheduled for October 1 in Tallinn and October 2 in Pärnu will be a real treat. On May 26, the Estonian National Opera will re-welcome Carmen, the ultimate classic among operas, directed by Walter Sutcliffe. August will be marked by Wagner’s majestic opera Parsifal at Noblessner Foundry within the framework of “Tallinn – European Capital of Culture 2011” and the Nargen Festival. The opera will be directed by Nicola Raab from Germany.

Arvo Pärt Festival will be wound up by the dance show Dance by Pärt on September 17 in Paide. The cast will include the soloists of the Estonian National Opera alongside with young dancers from Paide. The show is choreographed by Thomas Edur, Marina Kesler, Oksana Titova and Taavet Jansen. On December 3, the spectators are treated to a brand new stage production of The Nutcracker directed by Ben Stevenson, one of the key figures of American ballet. The premiere of Kenneth MacMillan’s ballet Manon on April 7 is an important landmark. Manon is one of the most highly acclaimed ballets of the 20th century, and only the theatres with outstanding and evenly skilled ensembles of dancers are allowed to perform it. The Estonian National Opera will celebrate International Dance Day with a grand dance gala featuring delightful dance numbers from classical etudes to modern ballet. The gala of April 30 will also mark the 50th birthday of Kaie Kõrb, the long-time prima ballerina of the Estonian National Opera. Beside the soloists of the Estonian National Opera, the cast will include dance stars from the American Ballet Theatre, the Royal Ballet (London) and the Bolshoi Theatre (Moscow). In the spring, the choreographer Oksana Titova will introduce a series of modern ballet productions titled AtticDance in the Chamber Hall of the Estonian National Opera. The series will be ushered in by The Little Prince.

On March 5, Andres Dvinjaninov will bring delight to children with the wonderful characters of the beloved children’s novel Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren.

The traditional ball of the Estonian National Opera, directed by Arne Mikk and Thomas Edur, will be held on December 31. This time, the etudes of the ball have been inspired by George Gershwin’s music and there will be several nice surprises for the guests.

In the new season, the troupe of the Estonian National Opera will welcome several new chorus members and ballet dancers. Mart Mikk will start in the position of the Opera Manager and Peeter Perens in that of the Chorus Master.
