Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus again at the Estonian National Opera after more than decade
Estonian National Opera
13.05.2010
Today on May 13, Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus will premiere at the Estonian National Opera. Die Fledermaus, one of the most popular operettas by Strauss is brought to the audience of the Estonian National Opera by the Dutch stage director Michiel Dijkema who is renowned for his highly original and intriguing stage productions. In Estonia, he has won acclaim for his 2006 production of Cinderella that is still in the repertoire of the theatre.
By virtue of its catchy melodies, enchanting dance numbers and mind-boggling storyline, Die Fledermaus that first premiered in 1874 in Vienna still continues to delight audiences across the world. At the Estonian National Opera, the opera has been staged for six times, most recently in 1997 when it was directed by Monika Wiesler from Austria. Michiel Dijkema’s stage production is set to be particularly provocative. According to Dijkema, Johann Strauss’ dazzling irony is targeted against the society indulging in pleasures, where people plunge headlong into hedonistic adventures, where nobody is the one they seem to be and where everybody cheats everybody and adopts another identity at least for one night.
When you ask from people why the operetta is called Die Fledermaus, not many of them know the right answer. In my stage production, I try to put the message across as lucidly as possible. The name actually stems from the events that took place before the beginning of the operetta: Eisenstein and Falke used to be good friends until Eisenstein played Falke a prank by leaving the drunk friend, clad in a bat costume, sleep in a park on their way home from a masked ball. Ever since that night Falke has tried to find a way of getting back at Eisenstein and the operetta is built on this revenge. In a nutshell and facetiously, one may say: Act I - everybody has a problem of some kind. Act II - all problems are drowned in alcohol. Act III - the problems re-emerge, but there is an easy culprit - champagne! This conveys the content very well and I believe that people do not need to know any more about it. However, the audience should be ready for surprises!" said Michiel Dijkema.

The music director and conductor of the operetta is Jüri Alperten, other conductors are Mihhail Gerts ja Erki Pehk. The stage director and designer is Michiel Dijkema, costume designer is Claudia Damm from Germany. The lighting designer is Bas Berensen from the Netherlands and the choreographer is Marina Kesler. The cast includes Urmas Põldma, Mati Kõrts, Aile Asszonyi, Heli Veskus, Mart Laur, Väino Puura, Rauno Elp, Andres Köster, René Soom, Oliver Kuusik, Aleksander Arder, Taimo Toomast, Mart Madiste, Kristina Vähi, Angelika Mikk, Tõnu Kark, Raivo E. Tamm and others.
