12.03.2010
On March 21, the Estonian National Opera will celebrate the 90th anniversary of its long-time soloist Georg Ots with a big gala concert. The DVD "Georg Ots - the legend of the Estonian National Opera" will be released on the same day and an exhibition of items related to Georg Ots will be opened on March 19.
The additional concerts held on March 21 and 22 will feature Gabriel Suovanen from Finland, Samsons Izjumovs from Latvia, Sergei Leiferkus from Russia and Jassi Zahharov, Rauno Elp, Aare Saal and other soloists of the Estonian National Opera who will pay their tribute to the beloved singer. The concerts will be conducted by Eri Klas, the art director is Arne Mikk and the designer is Liina Keevallik.

In cooperation with the Estonian National Broadcasting, the theatre will release a new DVD “Georg Ots – the legend of the Estonian National Opera“. This is the first DVD that features the past years of our music theatre in terms of serious music. Thanks to Jüri Kruus and his masterful restoration of the sound, the DVD allows one to the enjoy the well-nuanced voice of Georg Ots in its natural beauty,” said Arne Mikk. On the DVD, Georg Ots sings excerpts from works by Leigh, Mozart, Rubinstein, Ernesaks, Verdi, Bizet, Miljutin, Kálmán, Lehár, Listov and Kabalevski.

On March 19, an exhibition of interesting items related to Georg Ots will be opened at the Estonian National Opera in cooperation with the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum. The exhibited items include a gypsum imitation of the right hand of the legendary singer, colourful opera costumes, the official certificate issued to Georg Ots by the Institute of Theoretical Anatomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences concerning the naming of the small planet “1977 QA1“ after Georg Ots as „3738 OTS“ on June 20, 1996, and many other things. The exhibition is supported by SEB and it will be open until May 9, 2010.

Ots’ expressive and lyrical baritone captured the hearts of the audience and his frequent performances at concerts of classical as well as light music, and his radio and TV appearances made him a real star. During his thirty years as a soloist at the Estonian National Opera, Georg Ots who was noted for his exceptional stage presence, created a dazzling gallery of highly refined roles. One will never forget his Jago (Verdi’s “Othello“), Demon (Rubinstein’s “Demon“), Rigoletto (Verdi’s “Rigoletto“), Don Giovanni (Mozart’s “Don Giovanni“), Papageno (Mozart’s “Magic Flute“), Porgy (Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess“), Cervantes/don Quijote (Leigh’s “Man of La Mancha”) and many other roles. One of the highlights of his singing career was the film "Master X" produced by Lenfilm studios based on the operetta "Circus Princess" by Imre Kalmán. He continued to sing at the Estonian National Opera till his death in 1975. His debut as a stage director with the opera “Don Giovanni” was cut short.
