The Estonian National Opera Ballet Company became the Estonian National Ballet
Estonian National Opera
02.03.2010
Today, in the afternoon of March 2, the Estonian National Opera Ballet Company was ceremoniously announced the Estonian National Ballet. The ballet of the National Opera, that became 90 years old in 2008, will give the first premiere under the new aegis already the day after tomorrow, on March 4, when Leo Delibes’s "Coppélia", a staging with a special significance, will be staged. "Coppélia" was the first full-length ballet in the repertoire of the dance company of the theatre in 1922. The current staging will be brought out in Estonia by the English choreographer Ronald Hynd, the musical director of the show is Mihhail Gerts.
According to Toomas Edur, the Artistic Director of the Estonian National Ballet, operating as the National Ballet will give the 61-member company an opportunity to operate more independently and more freedom in decision making process, but will also place great responsibility on them. „My return to Estonia with my wife Age Oks, and the changes in the management of the ballet have drawn the eyes of the ballet world to our company. Along with the sharpened attention, a huge responsibility will fall on everyone’s shoulders to offer the internationally high-level art of dancing. I invest in the strength of the company, in an interesting repertoire, and I wish that the dancers associated their development and careers specifically with our company. The National Ballet’s own budgets and sponsors will ensure a wider scope in the future“, Edur added.

Today, a contract was signed with ERGO, the main sponsor of the Estonian National Ballet. Marek Začek, a member of the management board of ERGO Insurance Group, said that although the insurance business and ballet dancing are very different on the surface, they do have something in common – traditions. „The idea of insuring is to preserve everything beautiful and nice and to ensure the continuity of traditions in business, family and society as a whole. The idea of the art of ballet is to offer feast for the eyes, emotions and to develop the traditions that began hundreds of years ago and are accompanied by the experience without which no art or sustainable business could be born. The Estonian National Ballet represents almost a century-year-old dancing tradition and ERGO represents the insuring tradition that began in Germany in the 19th century. Thus, it is the wealth of experience that we have in common. ERGO contributes to the safekeeping and developing of the national high culture in order to ensure ballet experiences that make life more beautiful“, said Začek.
