On January 28, ETV will make a live broadcast of the premiere of The Love for Three Oranges, the stage production of the Estonian National Opera, which is regarded as one of the most important cultural events of the year. At the same time, ETV2 will provide a live coverage of the events that take place backstage. This is the very first live broadcast of an opera premiere in the history of Estonian television. The live broadcast on ETV will start at 19.00, an hour before the opera will begin. Three hosts — Ruth Alaküla, Marko Reikop and Anatoli Tafitšuk — will take the viewer from the theatre hall to the backstage, where the last hectic preparations are made. According to the production team, the highly informational live programme that, once the opera has started, continues on ETV2 may even be spiced with humour. The backstage live coverage will be broadcast on ETV2 from 19.55 till 22.30.
The broadcast of the funny and fanciful opera that has been extremely popular over time will start at 20.00. The opera version of the cult play The Love for Three Oranges was a huge success when played at Ugala Theatre in the 1990s is now staged at the Estonian National Opera by Dmitri Bertman, the highly acclaimed stage director from Helikon-Opera in Moscow. The music director and conductor is Arvo Volmer. The composer and librettist of the opera, based on the eponymous play by Carlo Gozzi, is Sergei Prokofjev. In the roles: Priit Volmer, Mart Madiste, Helen Lokuta, Jassi Zahharov, Urmas Põldma, Rauno Elp, Väino Puura, Heli Veskus and others.
The news programme Aktuaalne kaamera will air at its usual time during the intermission of the opera. The second part of the broadcast from the Estonian National Opera will start at 21.30 and approximately 22.30, when the opera is over, the live broadcast will continue from the backstage.
Aivar Mäe, general manager of the Estonian National Opera, has said that the National Opera is very glad to make television and opera history in Estonia and Europe together with the Estonian Public Broadcasting. “Six hours of broadcasting altogether gives the television audience a chance to be part of everything that happens on the stage and backstage of a proper opera theatre — and believe me, it will be beyond your imagination,” promises Mäe.
Heidi Pruuli, chief editor of ETV, claims that it is quite a venture to televise an opera at prime time. “For very many people, opera is something distant and incomprehensible, they do not feel any connection with that genre. Together with the Estonian National Opera, we try to break down those mental barriers and offer the audience a humorous trip to the magical world of music theatre. The viewer has a choice whether to follow the storyline of the opera or take a peek behind the scenes. I am waiting for this evening with a beating heart, because anything might happen there — literally!” said Pruuli.
The live broadcast will be brought to you by the directors Ülle Õun and Erle Veber, scriptwriter Lauri Lippmaa, editors Ruth Alaküla and Tõnis Leht, and producer Helen Valkna.
