An opera will be made based on Oksanen’s bestselling novel

Based on "Purge", the bestselling novel by Sofi Oksanen, who was chosen the person of the year by newspaper Postimees, an opera will be produced by the year of the title of the Capital of Culture, Tallinn.

The author of the opera based on the novel “Purge” by the Finnish writer of Estonian origin, Sofi Oksanen, is the composer Jüri Reinvere. The world premiere of the two-act opera will take place at the Estonian National Opera on February 3, 2011.

The idea of the opera first came up in the heads of Reinvere and Oksanen and five months ago they introduced it to the team of the Capital of Culture.

Then they found their way to the office of the director of the Estonian National Opera, Aivar Mäe. “We have planned our work for three years in advance and it is very difficult to cut in something else, but this project deserves it and at the moment we are making great efforts to come out with this performance in 2011,” said Mäe.

According to Mäe, “Purge” has been performed at several theatres in Finland and our Nordic neighbors take great interest in it. At first, the opera was planned to be performed in Estonia only in 2011, but now Mäe predicts that “Purge” will remain in the repertoire for three to four years.

The events of the opera develop in 1992, in Estonia that has just regained its independence. Through the memories of an old woman, the Estonia and the Estonians in between the World Wars and during the Soviet time are looked back on.

Aliide Truu, who lives in Western Estonia, finds a young woman who has passed out in her farmyard. Turns out it is not so easy to get rid of a random guest who has escaped from a violent man and the meeting reminds Aliide of one painfully tragic love from her youth and the choices that determined the fate of her close people.

Similar fates interweaving in the stories of two women show that after many years persecution has not ceased, but it has only taken a new form.

Jüri Reinvere is the composer of Estonian younger generation who is characterized by mixing genres and styles. A great part of his music is based on his own poetry in English. He has lived in Poland and Sweden for a short time and in Finland for 14 years where he got a Master’s degree at the Sibelius Academy. Reinvere has lived in Berlin since 2005. His work has been repeatedly acknowledged in Paris at the International Rostrum of Composers.
