December 21 marks the 75th anniversary of the legendary tenor Hendrik Krumm. The Estonian National Opera dedicates the performance of "La traviata" on December 19 to the beloved singer, and there is an exhibition "You sing as long as you are young" dedicated to Hendrik Krumm open in the audience rooms of the theatre.
Hendrik Krumm who was born in the Leisi parish in Saaremaa in 1934 was a versatile tenor whose repertoire involved works by Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, Donizetti and Rossini as well as Tchaikovsky, Mussorgski, Aava and many others. He was the first young Estonian singer in the post-war years who had a chance to study at the La Scala School of Music in Italy, where he was tutored by Gennaro Barra, a student of the legendary Enrico Caruso.
Hendrik Krumm began his musical studies at the Leisi secondary school and went on to study at the Tallinn Music School and Tallinn State Conservatory. In 1957–1961 Krumm sang in the chorus of the Estonian National Opera and in 1961 he became a soloist. From 1976 on, he also worked as a lector at the Tallinn State Conservatory and the well-known opera singers Nadja Kurem and Vello Jürna have grown under his hand.
Hendrik Krumm performed in several places in the USSR, in Finland, Hungary, Poland, Italy, Sweden, USA, Japan, Canada and elsewhere. His most important roles were Gustav III (“A Masked Ball“ by Verdi), don José (“Carmen“ by Bizet), Rodolfo (“La Boheme“ by Puccini), Radames (“Aida“ by Verdi), Alfredo (“La Traviata“ by Verdi), the Duke (“Rigoletto“ by Verdi), Manrico (“The Troubadoure” by Verdi), Enrico (“Lucia di Lammermoor” by Donizetti), Vaudemont (“Jolanthe” by Tchaikovsky) and many others. Hendrik Krumm’s wonderful Italian-sounding tenor is reminded by several audio and video recordings.
Until January 10, the exhibition “You sing as long as you are young” dedicated to Hendrik Krumm can be seen in the gallery of the first balcony of the Estonian National Opera. The exhibition was put together by Kalju Haan, the leading researcher of the theatre department of the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum, edited by Seidi Raid and designed by Katre Rohumaa.
In the staging of December 19, the role of Violetta will be sung by Sirkka-Liisa Lampimäki from Finland and the role of Alfredo by Andres Köster. The opera will be conducted by Jüri Alperten.
