Dmitri Bertman graduated from GITIS as a Stage Director of Music Theatre (the class of Professor G. Ansimov). During his studies he practiced at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and began staging at the professional theatres in Russia. After graduating from GITIS, he continued his Master studies at the same university and is now the head of the Department of Directing and Acting of the Musical Theatre. At the age of 23 he founded an experimental opera theatre Helikon-Opera that performs successfully in Russia and abroad. The troupe has recorded many opera CDs with different recording companies. Since 1994, he leads a master class at the Bern Opera Studio, where he teaches future singers the methods of C. Stanislavsky, M. Chekhov and F. Chaliapin. Since 1996 he leads the course of the Music Theatre at the Theatre Academy of Lunacharsky. In He has won the highly coveted Russian National Golden Mask award for best opera director for Carmen in 1998, The Tsar’s Bride in 1999 and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in 2000. Bertman has staged in many theatres in Russia and in Europe. He has participated in many international festivals in Switzerland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland and Lebanon. His works include Verdi’s La traviata and Aida, Puccini’s La bohème, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Tchaikovsky’s Undine, The Queen of Spades and Eugene Onegin, Prokofiev’s Maddalena, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Kashchei Bessmertniy, Mozart and Salieri, Czar’s Bride, Stravinski’s Mavra, Hindemith’s Hin und Zurück, Poulenc’s La voix humaine, J. Strauss’ The Bat, Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Reise’s Rasputin etc. Previously, Dmitri Bertman has staged at the Estonian National Opera Dargomïzhsky’s Rusalka (1999) and E.-S. Tüür’s Wallenberg (2007). In Tartu, he has staged Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann at Vanemuine in 2007.
In 2007 the Government of the Estonian Republic decided to give the Cultural Prize of the Republic of Estonia to the directing team of Wallenberg. In 2008 the same production won Bertman the 4th class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana and the Annual Estonian Theatre Award in the category of music performances.
