Mozart’s Triumph in Estonian National Opera
Such a high-quality staging of a Mozart’s opera – on the vocal, acting, orchestral as well as visual level – has, at least in this century, not been done in Estonia before (leaving aside the touring shows and concert performances).

Thus has (an opera by Mozart) never been done before in Estonia
Since the 19th century there has been a clichéd attitude that the last joint work of Mozart and his most brilliant librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, the opera buffa Così fan tutte ossia La scuola degli amanti (Thus Do All Women, or The School For Lovers), is a coarse story that would not merit much attention if it were not for Mozart’s great music.

Così fan tutte
Così fan tutte is possibly Mozart’s subtlest opera – at least musically, opinions are divided when it comes to the libretto. The overture with its transparent strings and gently conversational woodwind sets the tone, and throughout the score abounds with delicate orchestral colours. Also the vocal writing is marvellously sensitive and Mozart cleverly matches the voices in the many ensembles, none more magical than the trio Soave sia il vento.

Wallenberg
Raoul Wallenberg (1912 - ?) was a member of the influential Swedish banking family who worked as a not too successful businessman around the world - including at least two visits to Budapest. In 1944 he was assigned to the Swedish legation there. His mission was to help save Hungarian Jews from being sent to the Nazi extermination camps.

Un ballo in maschera
Un ballo in maschera has been seen in three previous productions at the Estonian National Opera during its century-long existence but it was performed as early as 1894 at Stadt-Theater in Reval, which was formerly the German name of the city. Then it was sung in German. The three more recent productions were premiered in 1928, 1961 and 1985.
