The Estonian National Opera starts its 103rd season
|
|
The new season of the Estonian National Opera is definitely going to delight and rejoice the visitors with its diverse repertoire and new productions. The 103rd season will get under way on Friday, August 29, with the multiple award winning opera "Wallenberg" by Erkki-Sven Tüür.
On Sunday, September 7, at 12.00-15.00, we are glad to invite everybody to the traditional Market Day where, in addition to favourable prices, one can enjoy the performances of the singers, dancers, chorus and orchestra of the Estonian National Opera. The lively event is conducted by Arvo Volmer, Eri Klas, Jüri Alperten, Mihhail Gerts and Erki Pehk.
The Winter Garden of the Estonian National Opera will embark on the new season with "Tango Ballet" by D.Hartchenko, set to the music of A. Piazzolla and featuring the dancers Helen Org-Veidebaum and Dmitri Hartchenko, and musicians Tiit Peterson on the guitar and Allan Jakobi on the accordion.
On Sunday, September 14 at 16.00, the White Hall of the Estonian National Opera will start a series of afternoon concerts with the first concert "Gems of Opera" where the tenor Juhan Tralla and the Russian soprano Irina Dubrovskaya will perform beloved opera arias and duets. Tarmo Eespere will accompany them on the piano.
On October 1, the Estonian National Opera will celebrate International Music Day with a spectacular opera gala where, along with the soloists of the Estonian National Opera, Annely Peebo, Aile Asszonyi, Juhan Tralla and Kristjan Mõisnik, the chorus and symphony orchestra of the Estonian National Opera will perform the best fragments of beloved operas.
On October 17, the opera "The Formula of Love" by the young Estonian composer Mari Vihmand will premiere as the first new production of the season. The opera, based on the novel "The Mathematics of Nina Gluckstein" by Esther Vilar, tells the love-story of Nina Gluckstein, living in Buenos Aires in the middle of the previous century, and a popular tango singer Santelmo. The opera is brought to the stage by the stage director Liis Kolle, designer Ann Lumiste and music director Arvo Volmer.
On November 1, the Estonian National Opera will celebrate the 90th anniversary of Estonian ballet with the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" by Tiit Härm. The orchestra is conducted by Anu Tali. On November 27, "Rigoletto" staged by Neeme Kuningas will mark the passing of 100 years from the first opera performance on the stage of the Estonian National Opera. The orchestra will be conducted by Jüri Alperten. This is exactly the day when 100 years passes from the premiere of the first opera in the professional Estonian theatre.
During the new season, we will carry on with our tradition of concert performances of less-known operas, on December 12, 18 and 20, there will be, for the very first time, concert performances of the four-act opera "Wilhelm Tell" by G. Rossini. Rossini who is, first and foremost, known as the author of such comical operas as "The Barber of Seville", "La cenerentola", "La gazza laddra" etc., has also created several operas with a serious content, among which "Wilhelm Tell" stands out as the most brilliant and grandiose. A wider spread of the opera has been hindered by its length and extremely complicated tenor part that only a few contemporary tenors are capable of performing in its original form. The music director and conductor of the concert performance is Arvo Volmer.
The year 2008 marks the anniversary of Gustav Ernesaks, the Estonian father of song, composer and choir leader. The 100th anniversary of Gustav Ernesaks will be celebrated in the concert hall of the Estonian National Opera with a gala concert that will feature fragments from such operas by Ernesaks as "Tormide rand" ("The Coast of Storms"), "Pühajärv" ("Sacred Lake"), "Tuleristsed"("Baptism of Fire") and "Käsikäes" ("Hand in Hand") and naturally the choir music composed by Ernesaks.
On December 31, one will have a chance to see the old year off and welcome the new one at the merry ball of the Estonian National Opera. In the first part of the New Year Ball, the guests will be entertained by the soloists and symphony orchestra of the Estonian National Opera whereas in the second part one can enjoy masterful dance art from the classics up to street-dance. Bel-Etage swing orchestra conducted by Mart Sander will invite everybody to the dance floor.
