Tristan must bring Isolde to Cornwall as a bride for his uncle, King Mark. On the sea voyage to Cornwall the youngsters fall in love. Isolde orders her faithful maid and friend Brangäne to prepare a death potion as a salvation from their sinful passion. Brangäne exchanges the death potion with a love potion. Tristan’s uncle and Isolde get married but Tristan and Isolde still love each other ardently.
Richard Wagner is a composer who became one of the greatest reformators in the history of opera due to his contradictory and brave ideas. Tristan and Isolde, which is a beautiful example of the new form of music drama that strives for a continuous flow of music and is an opposite of Italian number opera, premiered in 1865 in Hoftheater, Munich. Wagner wrote the libretto, which is based on the Tristan story from a cycle of Celtic legends, in 1859. The opera is influenced by the philosophy of Schopenhauer according to which life is a sequence of sufferings and happiness is only a delusion. Besides Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the story of Tristan and Isolde is the greatest love drama of all ages. The tense music drama of Wagner is inspired by the love affair the composer had with Mathilde Wesendonck, the spouse of his patron. Since its premiere, the opera has been accompanied by great success and it is frequently performed all over the world. Almost a generation has passed since the last performance of Tristan and Isolde in the Estonian National Opera when 75 years ago the title roles were sung by Karl Ots and Olga Torokoff-Tiedeberg. The opera was conducted by the first Chief Conductor of the Estonian National Opera – Raimund Kull.
